Chapter 13

It was three weeks later when it suddenly dawned on me that I was late. I hadn’t even thought about protection because humans rarely became impregnated by a vampire, unless they had vampire blood in their linage.

I stood that Friday night in my bathroom staring at the test. I bought it totally expecting it to be negative, I put my lateness down to stress, I never in my wildest fantasies expected to be staring at a two pink lines telling me, beyond a doubt that I was pregnant.

Shit, shit, shit.

I was in shock, one because the chances of a human falling pregnant to a vamp were like, nearly zero and when it did happen the mother would have an early miscarriage or the baby would die shortly after birth. There were only a handful of known vamp/human hybrids known to survive to adulthood.

I was torn because even though I hadn’t planned it there was a life growing inside me, a part of Aldire, and odds on it was going to die.

A knock on my bathroom door interrupted my thoughts, Aldire.

“Liv what’s wrong?” He asked almost as soon as I opened it up.

One sure way to send a guy running and screaming was for sure to tell him you were pregnant, but I couldn’t keep it from him.

I opened the door.

“Aldire” I started to cry.

“Liv? Is it your ex?” He was at my side now, holding my shoulders gently.

I shook my head, I didn’t want to say it out loud, but I had to.

“Aldire, I’m pregnant.” My voice broke as fresh sobs washed over me.

“What?” his voice was soft.

“I’m pregnant.” I repeated.

“Are you certain” he asked.

“Yes, there were two tests in the pack, and I did them both.”

He brought his hand to his chin, deep in worry and thought.

I went through to the kitchen and stuck the kettle on, then I heaved into the sink. I’d felt queasy for the last few days, but again, I’d put it down to worry.

Aldire was right behind me holding my hair up.

“Easy” He whispered.

When I’d finished and wiped my mouth, he rinsed out the sink and made me coffee.

“I mean I know the odds are that it won’t survive but I wanted you to know.”

“We need to get you to safety” He said once I was comfortable on the couch, coffee in hand.”

“Safety, I am not safe here?”

“I was going to speak to you this evening regardless. It seems word has got back to my family that I have a favorite.”

“What, so you are ashamed?”

“No, no!” He said “Don’t ever think that, however they would like to meet you.”

“You want me to go stay with your family, your vampire family?”

“Yes.” He said with a smile.

“And you will be there too?”

“Of course, I’ll be there. We can also do what we can to give the babe the best chance.”

“I didn’t know you could do anything.”

“We can take you to our oracle, she will be able to tell us if the babe is strong and she can give you herbs and such to help.
